What data is expected?

A list of registered companies and key data about each company. Open data from company registers may be used for many ends: e.g. enabling customers and businesses to see with whom they deal, or to see where a company has registered offices. This definition draws on the work of OpenCorporates.

Collector name Kenya Registrar of Companies under the Office of the Attorney General, State Law Office and Department of Justice. Website: http://www.statelaw.go.ke/registrar-of-companies/ State Law Office and Department of Justice is a government body collecting company registration data. I verified this and found that this agency “undertakes the reviewing and overseeing of legal matters pertaining to registration of companies, business names, societies, adoptions and marriages.” Source: http://www.statelaw.go.ke/about-office-of-the-attorney-general-and-department-of-justice/ The same website hosts the registrar of companies (I’m unsure whether it is a function provided by the Dept of Justice or not). An alternative provider is Kenya's e-gov portal “eCitizen” which shows the companies registered via the registrar of companies. The portal provides company name search: https://www.ecitizen.go.ke/ecitizen-services.html but a login with one’s ID number is necessary. We used this portal as our reference point.
The original researcher argues that eCitizen portal allows one to search for businesses by name. This is meant to return the Phone number, email, postal address, county (similar to state), district, locality, street/road, and building. However, there is no information except for incomplete postal address for most of the companies I searched for. It requires authentication. http://openduka.org/ by Open Institute aimed at providing the same service, though there is need to verify whether their data is up to date. Open duka provides information on individuals and organisations, which includes tenders, contracts, land ownership, and court cases. This fits anyone including ordinary citizens, journalists, and civic activists interested in determining the ownership structure of certain legal entities in Kenya. OpenDuka has the potential to serve as an alternative open platform (no need for authentication unlike eCitizen), except that it lacks current data, and it's search functionality does not always provide the desired results.
